Can anyone tell me why when you press the shutter button on an SLR to take a photo you hear the "click" sound, whereas with a compact there is no
sound at all? Don't they work in the same way?

I think that if you look in your settings these sounds maybe turned on or off.

Its probably the mirror lifting out of the way of the sensor when the image is recorded as well as the roller blind shutter moving across at high speed. Lots
happens when you use a SLR to take a picture. the compact usually have a quiet shutter and make just about no noise when you take the picture because they
don't use a mirror to see the image through the lens, you see the image on a screen.
